Frequently Asked Questions

For users and clinicians

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve, often without symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. It frequently goes undiagnosed but is treatable when caught early - further vision loss can be prevented. Learn more at Glaucoma Australia.

Why was G-Screen created?

Most people see an optometrist when their vision worsens, but early glaucoma doesn't work like that. By the time you notice symptoms, significant damage may already be done. G-Screen was created to help more people become aware of glaucoma and see an eye care professional sooner. We're working towards multilingual support to lower barriers even further.

Who developed G-Screen?

G-Screen was developed by an Australian optometrist, with input from glaucoma ophthalmologists and vision science researchers.

How does the eye health check work?

G-Screen includes a brief survey about your age, family history and eye health, a near visual acuity check, and a peripheral vision test. The vision tests use Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF) technology, which is FDA-cleared and TGA-registered. Educational content is informed by published guidelines from Glaucoma Australia.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. G-Screen is an educational awareness tool, not a diagnostic test. It presents your test data and survey responses for discussion with your eye care professional. Only a qualified eye care professional can diagnose glaucoma.

What devices can I use?

G-Screen works on desktop computers, laptops and tablets 10 inches or larger. Smartphones are not supported. A dimly lit environment works best.

Is my data stored?

No account or personal information is required. Anonymised results may be stored for research purposes and cannot be linked to you.

Why doesn't G-Screen ask about diabetes or other conditions?

G-Screen focuses on key factors that can be quickly assessed. Other factors like diabetes, high myopia and steroid use are best discussed with your optometrist or eye care professional.

I'm a clinician. Can I recommend this?

Yes. G-Screen is free and designed to complement clinical practice. We welcome collaborators who share our approach - get in touch if you'd like to work together.
